Did
RA not mention her search for Clara Waters some where in the Mitchell. Well,
perhaps she already feels closer to her.
It
is almost impossible to imagine the hardships faced by the early pioneers,
while we travel in air conditioned vehicles, carrying sufficient water, food
and virtually a pharmacy in the handbag and, nowadays, with forms of
communication and entertainment then unimaginable.
But
groveling in the sand, being eaten by bull ants in the searing heat while
trying to change a tyre, where below the sand the surface is as hard as slate,
can give you an inkling.
At
the time, RA receive a little wound, a gash at the point of entry and a large
splinter about 2.5 cms lodged under the skin beyond that. With her husband’s
help it was easily removed and then dressed appropriately to encourage healing.
Minor
compared to the experience of Clara Waters.
